About Thornton

Thornton has a varied history, but up until relatively recently, in fact, as late as the mid-1950s, it was a place that consisted solely of farmland. The town takes its name from one of the former Governors of Colorado, a man named Dan Thornton.

It was in the mid part of this decade that a man called Sam Hoffman bought a lot off Washington Street. He began to lay out the plans for a town, and this became the first fully planned out town in Adams County. More than that, it was also the first place in Adams County to offer access to all municipal services from one tax levy. This eve included things like free trash pick-ups.

A year after Sam Hoffman had bought his lot and begun to develop the town as we see it today, The Thornton Community Association (TCA) was formed. This was set up to help guide and develop the new town’s vision for the future.

It expanded pretty rapidly, and by the end of the following year (1955), there were just under six thousand residents in the town and one thousand two hundred new homes built.
