5 Best Cake Accessories You Must Have

5 Best Cake Accessories You Must Have

Posted by Brian Burke on Tuesday, April 14th, 2020 at 8:15am.

I am so excited to share my list of must-have cake decorating accessories. I like to keep it simple in terms of the tools I use for cake decorating. When I do find a tool that I love, there is a good reason that I have fallen in love. Usually, it’s because the tool makes cake decorating quicker and easier. I am thrifty when it comes to buying my accessories because collecting them could easily get out of hand. However, the right tools can save you time and money over the long haul.

These 5 tools and accessories make cake decorating so much easier!

mixer blade

The Mixer Blade

There are lots of attachments for a stand-up mixer. They are designed to make the time you spend baking a whole lot easier. Flex edge beaters work so well that you never have to fumble around with a spatula. No matter what type of batter or dough you are working with, a mixer blade will make things a lot easier.

Fitting your cake mixer with a scraper blade is super time-saving. You don’t have to stop to repeatedly scrape the sides of your mixing bowl. Any amount of time saved when making cakes full-time is a huge help. You will have to be sure to find the correct size for your blender.

A Pasta Roller

A pasta roller is a must-have for making sugar flowers or rolling fondant. I use it for tons of cake decorating projects like ruffles, cut-outs, borders, and more. You can find a pasta roller attachment or a stand-alone version. Either works great and is worth the money.

The pasta roller is also ideal for making cupcake toppers. When rolling fondant for more than one topper, you can ensure that each topper is the same thickness. The pasta roller can be set on the thickness you desire to help keep everything consistent in your project.

Pasta machines are also great for making cake ruffles. If you want to make beautiful uniformed ruffles for wedding decorations, for instance, you need a pasta roller. I can’t imagine trying to make a ruffle cake without mine.

A Cake Turntable

Listen. You need a really good cake turntable. I’ll admit that when I first began decorating cakes I was hesitant to spend much on my tools and accessories. At the time it was just my little hobby. I worked without one for quite a while and it was awful. I finally broke down and bought the least expensive turntable I could find. It did an OK job compared to the lazy susan I had previously, and designated as my make-shift turntable, but it could have been much better. It had a little tick when it turned that always caused a groove or dip in my frosting. When I finally bought a decent turntable my frosting application was flawless. I can’t imaging frosting a cake without it now.

cake leveler

A Cake Leveler

I have witnessed master cake decorators online tort cake layers by hand in seconds. The layers seem to come out perfectly every single time. Mine, on the other hand, do not. This is why I love my cake leveler. It is so handy. Mine is not super fancy or anything but it is one of my best friends. I currently use a single blade but I do have my eye on a multi-blade leveler.

Edible Image Printer

I have saved the best for last. I fell in love with the idea of having an edible image printer long before I decided to go ahead and buy one. I had so many plans for how I would use it, but let me tell you, I have used it for more projects than I could ever have imagined.

There are more technological options on the market than ever. This includes kitchen technology. Edible printers allow you to print almost anything to add to your baking project. The printers use edible paper and color. When choosing an edible printer you want to choose one with a proven track record for quality and safety.

If you are thinking of getting serious about your cake decorating, it’s time to get some quality cake decorating tools. I would love to hear about your favorite tools so please share them by leaving a comment below.
