Moving Superstitions

Halloween is here, and, to make sure we celebrate it properly, we thought a guide to the most popular superstitions around the globe would be the best way to honor the tradition.                                                                                                                                                                                                     The infographic below, originally put together by the creative team at the self-storage listings website STORAGECafé, presents some ideas about what a home should look like if you want to keep it protected from supernatural forces.                                                                                                                                                                                              Superstitions tend to date back to the old days when the supernatural was thought to be behind most things that couldn’t be explained. These were often to do with how people regarded life-changing events such as moving – and that’s perfectly natural, some would say, as the home has always been the center of the universe for each family.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Moving into a new home is an all-important, life-defining moment – it represents new beginnings, the kind of event that should be surrounded by good auspices and the right kind of karma. We have inherited a lot of symbolic gestures and actions meant to fend off evil forces and to bring benevolence upon the people moving into the new home.                                                                                                                                                                                                              What’s truly interesting is that, after looking closer at each superstition, you realize it is more than that – it really is a piece of practical advice.Let’s take, for example, the habit of bringing salt and bread into a new home, which, supposedly, is setting up the owners for a prosperous, bountiful life. However, there’s also the practical aspect of the myth: we all know how exhausting moving can be, and how hungry everyone is by the end of a day. So, having at least some bread around to snack on was a pretty good idea.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Check out all the superstitions mentioned in this infographic and let us know in the comments which one, if any, are you still following, or if your family has other traditions related to moving!
